My understanding is that once something is on the Archive, it is here forever and that on the torrent sites they are only available for a relatively short time so it is tolerated...

Not sure how relevant this is but I came across it last night (in wikipedia) and felt I should save it... Had no idea I would use it this soon...

Problem with Archive.org

In November of 2005, the Dead's management outraged fans by asking the operators of the popular Internet Archive (archive.org) to stop making concerts available for download, and to offer only streamcast recordings instead. The band's spokesman, Dennis McNally, claimed such a repository "doesn't represent Grateful Dead values" because it doesn't foster one-to-one connections between fans. However, David Gans, host of a syndicated radio program, "The Grateful Dead Hour," speculates that the band is motivated by money, noting "when they were making $50 million a year on the road, there wasn't a lot of pressure to monetize their archives."[1]

The removal of the Dead's concerts from Archive.org created a storm of protest, in addition to a rapidly spreading boycott of the band's remaining commercial products. Several days after the announcement that the concerts had been removed, Brewster Kahle of Archive.Org made a cryptic announcement that audience tapes of the concerts would again become available, though so-called board tapes would only be available as streaming audio. Kahle claimed that the whole affair had been a "misunderstanding," but John Perry Barlow, one of the band's lyricists, claimed that concerts had been restored after several members of the band had backed away from their earlier opposition after realizing they had created a public relations "catastrophe."

Speeding Arrow would have the same issue--no one to one filesharing. I think the archive got hit because a) its collection is MASSIVE. b) it is organized c)it is Dead and only Dead (in the GD section) d) Shnflac and Speedingarrow came after the archive was closed off, and e) once the seeders are gone, the show is "dead"--this means that the filesharing is relatively short lived. On Dime, for example, the Dead shows are only around 2% of the total.

Most shows were posted here first. I also think that the archive fiasco was a test--see what the response was.

Ultimately, with so many dl sites, the Dead--who were the first to open up their vaults, allow taping and trading, etc., realized that it would really look bad to closet them all down. Thankfully.

I see he changed his post.....now mine doesn't make as much sense anymore but it still holds true.

Why do the Mods not ban his IP address? This site has been enjoyable as of late and this g2y reappeared. I am not really big into rules or banishment but this guy goes too far. I don't even see the sense in what he does. I love randomness and wacky sense of humor but.....

BTW thanks for all the opinions and good discussion on this matter of downloading. My opinion does not change but I do see slightly differently and with less malice towards the Dead. I know it's their art and have any right do as pleased but I will always fall back to the big man's quote. "Once we are done with it, they can have it".

Actually: you do write with full syntax, unlike 2. If you do not know--well, that may be for the best.

If I misunderstood your post or it was a quip gone awry (I believe I hold the current record for the post gone most awry), sorry about that.

Welcome to the monkey house.

If true sorry for the mistake. The 2's in the name appears similar to our hero in question.

I thought it odd you commented about Pig's grammar when you do not capitalize proper nouns ;). Besides, Pig is usually right on regardless of grammar and felt the need to say something.

Sometimes I wonder if I have too much time on my hands.

"Stoned" is definitely not your "2 guy" or our "Mr Talent", he has his own "songs" on here so that eliminates him as a suspect. I have been accused of being smily too's as well but I think most folks know the difference... I hope.

Oh and Akte/au├čer wie.

yea i know when and how to capitalize if i need to be super proper, but i just dont think theyre all that necessary. just as long as people can understand what youre saying without having to study it. not that i think im a literary genius, im sure someone had to study this, but hey...i try.

I still love the "misunderstanding" angle. They should have done what they needed/wanted to do, post notices on each of their websites and move on. Would have been the more professional way to do it. Instead they pulled a Baltimore Colts and and tried to sneak away in the middle of the night. With that said, I have no issues with the actual stance itself. They kept ticket prices low, created their own ticketing service which allowed me a better chance to get tix to sold out gigs. More power to them, just wished they had a bit more common sense.

I think the comment about money says enough for me. They most certainly did not make 50 million a year before lets say...1987 so why do they need more money? 50 million for 8 years is a lot of cash. More than what most will ever need. They have made a lot of money already, what's the need for more money?

All I think is that money grubbing Koons gets my cash if I buy anything from them anymore including live shows through GDP or Rhino. Thats something I will not ever do is give her any of my money. Her thinking is the epitome of why this decision is so wrong. I know she wouldn't be the only one making money because of this but I am not foolish enough to think the others are not thinking the same thing.

I find it ironic that this being one of the days of Monterey Pop Fest.. The reason the Dead said no to filming rights is they did not want the LA music people to make money off them. In fact the whole San Fran music scene/bands said no to the money making project of the movie. (Of course Janis/Big Brother relented later) I just want to know what changed with them?
